Camera update

It was pointed out to me that I forgot to give the conclusion to the left behind backpack/camera saga...as I said we left for Montserrat very early, too early for a bar to be open, and they also didn't have a phone number listed for us to call.  While we were in Montserrat it occurred to Simone that we could call the restaurant we had been at the night before, which was just around the corner from the bar, and ask for their help.  (Talking of help, having a fluent Spanish speaker in our group has been truly wonderful, thank you Simone!) When she called, the waiter from the night before said no worries, and while she was on the phone, walked around the corner to the bar, collected the bag, checked the contents and said they'd look after it for us!   When we got back into Barcelona Greg took the metro there right away, and tipped both the waiter and the people in the bar - a reward for being so honest and helpful :-)  We have been very careful to check in on people's backpacks ever since...!

 6 April So we had this bonus extra day in Porto until everyone arrived, how to spend it was the question?  I suggested we take the metro out to the beach and have lunch there.  Heather, Richard, Dean, Esther, Tania, Russell (who had arrived late the night before), Simone, Lucy, Greg and I set out to Matosinhos.  I had had a terrible migrane headache the night before (probably a combination of being  dehydrated from flying - despite drinking lots of water! - and a few drinks from dinner) so was feeling a bit under the weather and we missed the stop we were supposed to get off at, and had to walk a long way past the port into town!!  Ah well, we all needed to stretch our legs after all the flying we had done!  We found the beach - it was quite warm by this time.  The sandy part of the beach was huge - the water was about a kilometre away!  It was funny to see the girls in their sexy g-string bikinis and socks, as the sand was obviously very ho...

Santiago de Compostela

 19 June So we made it to our little apartment which is part of the old city, just 10 minutes stroll from the cathedral - we can ALMOST see it from our window! We googled good places to eat and headed into town, hoping that we'd get in somewhere as it was early... but the town is full of tourists and pilgrims and tourist pilgrims!  A lot of them are Spanish too!  We went to one place that was highly rated but they couldn't fit us in until 10.15!  Gasp.  We found another cafe and rebooked the first one for tomorrow night.   We ordered the Padron Peppers - they are so delicious.  The Galicia pie, which is made with the dried cod (bacalao) - it was OK but I don't feel we need to try it again.  We also had calamari and chips!  Washed down with wine and beer.  And we were in bed before our 10.15 previous booking! 20 June Happy Birthday Fiona!  Our lovely sister in law/sister who will be visiting us soon in Darwin! München

 28 April We arrived into Munich in heavy cloud and rain and a good few degrees colder than Spain.  How remarkable to travel 2.5 hours and be in a different country, different customs, food and weather!  The flight attendant welcomed us: "Have a nice, wet day in Munich". After dropping off our luggage we set off to find the Hofbrauhaus.  It was drizzling lightly so  we thought we'd be fine walking even though Esther was keen to take the U bahn.  We took a few wrong turns - but made it.  They don't take bookings from plebs (although there were some reserved tables, so if you are special enough, it happens!) so you just have to wander through the huge building eyeing off people who look like they have just about finished their drinks then hover near them expectantly until they finally relinquish their seats and we could slide straight in!  It was very hot in the hall.  Dean says this is so they can sell more beer!!  Greg was hanging out fo...
